Summary

The second edition of the European School on Nuclear Materials (ESNMS 2022) took place from November 7 to November 11, 2022 at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques (IESC) in Cargèse, Corsica, France. It was co-organized by the Energy Division of CEA, the CNRS CEMHTI laboratory from France and the Swedish KTH Royal Institute of Technology with support of the Joint Programme on Nuclear Materials and the HEU OperaHPC project, the CEA MINOS centre for excellence on nuclear materials and the Energy platform from KTH.

The school included 17 lectures on experimental characterization techniques and multiscale modelling methods and their application on metallic and ceramic structural materials of fission and fusion reactors, as well as nuclear fuels. The ESNMS 2022 brought together 41 participants from all over Europe, mostly doctoral students, but also post-docs and young permanent researchers, supervised by 13 lecturers. In order to increase active participation and interactions, participants worked in groups on case studies with the support of the lecturers and presented the results of their work in front of their fellow students. This enabled them to work on applications and show the contribution of materials science to the investigation of various issues concerning the behaviour of nuclear materials.

After a first edition organized online two years ago, this second edition enabled the participants to exchange live with other students and lecturers and enjoy the beautiful location and weather. It was a very interesting and dynamic school with lots of interaction between all participants.
